Adult Outdoor Allergies Triggers, Symptoms, and Relief
Outdoor allergy sufferers: You’re not alone!
Allergic rhinitis, often called hay fever, affects 19.2 million adults and 5.2 million children.1
The most common indoor/outdoor allergy triggers are: tree, grass and weed pollen, mould spores dust mites, cockroaches, cat, dog and rodent dander.1
However, the weather can affect the amount of pollen in the air at any time. Seasonal allergic rhinitis is often caused by tree pollen in the early spring. During the late spring and early summer, grass pollen often causes symptoms. Late summer and fall hay fever is caused by weed pollen. In warmer places, pollination can be year-round2
Here’s what “allergy” actually means
Your immune system controls how your body defends itself. For instance, if you have an allergy to pollen, the immune system identifies pollen as an invader or allergen. Your immune system overreacts by producing antibodies called Immunoglobulin E (IgE). These antibodies travel to cells that release chemicals, causing an allergic reaction.2
This reaction could cause coughing†, sneezing, hives, rashes, itchy eyes, a runny nose and a scratchy throat.1
If you’re allergic, you’ll recognize these symptoms
Pollen are tiny grains needed to fertilize many kinds of plants. many plants have flowers which produce powdery pollen that are easily spread by wind. These culprits cause allergy symptoms.2
The common signs and symptoms of adult outdoor allergies include:2
Itchiness in your nose, the roof of your mouth, throat, eyes or ears.2
If you experience any of these symptoms, we recommend speaking with your primary care provider or an allergist. Discuss your symptoms and get a diagnosis.
A few things you can do
It’s very difficult to avoid plant pollen, but there are a few things you can do:2
Keep your windows closed at night.2
If possible, use air conditioning, which cleans, cools and dries the air.2
Try to stay indoors when the pollen or mold counts are high.2
Wear a pollen mask if long periods of exposure are unavoidable.2
Take a shower, shampoo your hair and change clothes.2
Avoid being responsible for mowing lawns or raking leaves.2
